Not My Typical Tuesday

May 28
We were lucky enough to trade our converse for heels this past Tuesday when some of the girls from the studio attended the Modern Museum of Art’s Annual Garden Party. We enjoyed of night of cocktails, music and mingling in the museum’s sculpture garden.
For a few days leading up to the event we have been plotting our ensembles. Each of us drew inspiration from some very interesting vintage pieces that Diana, recently, unearthed! Laura wore a cream Robert Rodriguez bubble dress with contrast black bandage detail along the bodice and straps. Very classic, she added red lips and black satin pumps. For jewelry, she kept it simple with Diana’s new Art Deco ears and a vintage black alligator band watch.
Diana’s outfit choice came down to the wire! She arrived at my apartment with, of course, two dresses! The billowy tangerine one-shoulder didn’t make the cut as it seemed a little too garden-y for the garden party. Laura and I loved the 2nd option, a silk Hale Bob t-shirt dress adorned with brass studs. (I can foresee this dress getting borrowed sometime soon!) D wore her own design earrings, the new baby Tara piece! They added just enough sparkle.
I chose a white strapless Tracy Reese party dress. My metallic gray leather Lauren Merkin clutch and chunky black heels toughened up my otherwise girly and romantic look. For jewels, I asked D to string together 3 triangular vintage pieces to create a collar looking necklace.
The Yeah, Yeah, Yeahs performed and set the soundtrack and laid-back tone for the evening. The lead vocalist, Karen O, of course, sounded amazing, but she looked even better in a short brightly printed kimono-style dress. They did a beautiful stringed version of ‘Maps’- a highlight of the night for sure.
Our group loved the night of making new friends with the diverse crowd of Wall-streeters and artsy-types. It was a wonderful New York City evening.

Story Tellers…..

Today, I received a letter; tucked inside the letter were three amazing photographs. The images were of a young woman who should not be alive. She should not have on the graduation cap and gown as she does in one picture, she should not be with her new nephew in the other, and she definitely should not be smiling so beautifully as she is in the last picture.

But she is.

Faith, Hope and Love can do amazing things. Faith, even just a small amount can move mountains. Hope, can lift spirits, and straighten paths. Love can heal, mend and nurture impossible situations.

The letter that accompanied the photographs was an astounding testimony of one family’s faith, hope and love that took them on a journey witnessing healing and miracles.

Deeply humbled that someone took the time to share their story with me, I feel now more than ever called to share with you something that can’t stop thinking about.

Eight months ago, I designed a piece of jewelry, a disk about two inches in diameter that can be stamped and personalized. It is textured and rich in feeling. During the design process, I felt like the piece had more to say than simply a birth date or a monogram. And it did! In just a few months it has become a reminder of something greater within each of those who wear it; it is a symbol of the stories we carry around with us, that inspire us and make us who we are.

Ironically, one of the family members of the girl in the pictures I mentioned above wrote me about a horrible accident, one in which with girl should not have survived. Meghan here in my New York studio (the other half of my brain) suggested we send to this family the disk I had designed stamped with Faith, Hope and Love. Neither Meghan nor I probably ever believed we would months later get numerous thank you notes and then eventually photographs of Ashley (the survivor) wearing this necklace.

Sometimes I design pieces without actually knowing why at the time. Sometimes they are just there, left in the boxes of samples waiting to go out to the right person in the right time of need.

We all have a story of Faith Hope and Love, sometimes our stories are even of jumping, or taking chances, of daring to live a different way. This season I want to ask you to share your stories. I have made a place on our site for your stories of inspiration. The Moon is Round, is coming soon…a story that will change how we all live our lives. To the Moon and Back is also coming soon, a testimony of love that goes beyond the earthly measurements we know.

So, what is your story? What is on your disk? What do you need to be reminded of? Thank you for sharing some Faith Hope and Love with us all.
